Spring Show

Alresford and District Horticultural society held their Annual Spring Show on Wednesday 10 April. In spite of the weather that had caused most people’s daffodils to be over, it was very well supported. There were plenty of tulips and other spring flowers on display and several entries of large containers of spring bulbs. Late hellebores and early rhubarb enabled entries in those classes and spring flowers not included elsewhere could be arranged in a small container.

Judging was by Members’ votes and a points system was applied to find the winner.

Who can forget last week’s thunderstorm when Winchester High Street was flooded and submerged cars had to be rescued by the fire service?  Some of the clay soil from the Sun Lane development ended up in Nursery Road. I hope you were not affected. One of our gutters was overwhelmed and we had a Niagara Falls moment. But the warmer weather has certainly had an effect on our gardens. Shrubs and trees have put on a growth spurt and many herbaceous borders look very colourful. I’m sure the hollyhocks and hydrangeas have never looked better.

We have passed mid summer’s day and are still waiting for some proper summer weather. I’m sure the bees are too as I heard recently that a beekeeper has had to feed his bees as pollen is in short supply. So we were specially lucky on Saturday 29th June when many of our members gathered together on a warm and sunny evening for the Horticultural Society’s annual summer party. We are grateful to Val Ramshaw for opening her garden to members and guests who also had the opportunity to view her extensive collection of cacti. Perhaps some of you saw a recent episode of Gardeners World which featured a vast collection of cacti. Well Val is well on the way. Our Show schedules are now available…
